Instagram Roundup

Monday, January 30, 2012

It was a fun-filled weekend in our house. There was a trip to the Farmer's Market, a quick thrift run, a visit from Carl's cousin, Sabine & her family, and on Saturday evening, my mom came in to stay for the week! Yesterday was her birthday and while I didn't take photos with my phone/camera, I did snap some on hers, so I'll have to steal them from her and post them here later. For now, he's a peek at the last few days around here, via Instagrams.

a cute close-up | all ready to hit the farmer's market!

farm fresh greens.
we bought a few large stalks of broccoli and boiled/ate them with cheese last night. nom nom.

a pedicure with a baby on top (my mama got a birthday mani) | shopping with a sleepy baby | the vintage fondue set we gifted my mom (she recently moved into a new house, so i figured it'd be perfect)

Eep! So much to do, so little time. Just wanted to check in really quickly. Hope ya'll  have a wonderful week!!

DIY: Fifty Things

Friday, January 27, 2012

Our budget was pretty tight around Christmastime this past year, so Carl and I exchanged small presents, and gave our friends and family homemade gifts. Actually, I ended up making the gift I gave to Carl, too. I know what you're thinking, "A Christmas gift post?! Isn't it a little late for that!?" Well, yes. But somehow this post is so late that it's actually early (or right in time?)...for Valentine's Day!

I saw the idea on Pinterest and knew immediately it was something I'd like to make for Carl, but with the rush of the holidays, I ended up having just a few hours to put it together. It was really all I needed.

50 Things I Love About You

  • A deck of playing cards
  • Scissors
  • A glue stick
  • Paper
  • A marker (or computer ink)

I was lucky to have this pretty deck (with Van Gogh's Starry Night for card backs) at home and I chose a fun font for the cover, then moved to the real fun part...thinking of 50 things I love about my partner, best friend and baby-daddy, Carl.
I found that once I start going, and just starting thinking about the course of our days, I had to actually reign myself in because there are just so many things I love about many things that are special and unique to who he is that I could have easily done another fifty (but that seemed excessive).
I typed each reason out and printed then cut each line, positioning and securing one reason on each card with a glue stick (in retrospect maybe ModgePodge would have been more durable). Easypeasy.

Then I gathered the cards and tied a ribbon around the deck, hid it in my luggage and revealed it to Carl on Christmas morning. According to Carl, it was the best gift he had ever received :)

7 Months!! & an Open Letter to Lily

Monday, January 23, 2012

Our Dearest Lily,

It's that time again, sweet girl. Another mini-birthday. Yet another month has breezed by and you're now a staggering seven months old. That's right, you've been here with us for seven whole months--quite literally *the very best* time in our lives.

This past month was an exciting one for our entire family; it was full of firsts and milestones for all of us. As a family, we took our first cruise and had a fantastic time. It was a really special vacation, and you were the perfect little passenger (and the youngest onboard!).

You traveled to a different country (Mexico), felt the ocean waves, celebrated Hannukah, Christmas and New Year's Eve, grew a tooth, got a big girl carseat, ate a broccoli, ate a lemon, ate an avocado ( you see a pattern here?), all for the very first time.

You're sitting up like a pro, and absolutely *love* it when Papa grabs your little ankles and flips you over. You flash a great big, toothy smile, cock your head to the side and arch your back in anticipation. You still are very much into breastfeeding, which I have to admit, I'm very much into, too. Our lunchtime visits and laying down in bed and nursing you in the evenings are my favorite parts of the day during the week.

You and Hudson are beginning to develop a nice bond and it's so funny to watch you tug at his little jowls while he (ever so patiently) sits there and, well, takes it. Haha! Papa and I are very excited to see you two grow up together and we know that you'll just adore him as you get older.

There's not much that you don't enjoy, to be honest. Okay, you don't love wearing shoes, and you much prefer being held/entertained than being left to play with your toys on your own, but don't we all?

I can go on and on about how quickly the time is passing, and what a joy you have been to us, but I think, (I hope), you can feel all of that. I cannot even find words to express how blissfully happy you've made us, my love. It's been the thrill of a lifetime to watch you grow and explore, and through you, we have learned what it truly means to love.

Happy seven months, little Foochie. We adore you.

Holds & Smooches,

Your ever-loving

Sunlight and Stellas

Sunday, January 22, 2012

This post is a little bit of a cheat, since these photos are from a few weekends ago, but I just stumbled upon them while organizing my desktop and thought I'd share.

January has been incredibly mild weather-wise in San Antonio, and we've enjoyed a few straight weeks of lovely, sunny weather. On this particular afternoon (I think it was a Sunday), the fam headed out to La Tuna Grill, a cool little patio bar that's named for the giant Tuna plants (cacti) that surround it.

We splurged on a few Stellas, basked in the sunlight and took a bunch of pictures of our super cute baby in her very presidential onesie.

In the Kitchen: Calabasitas!

Wednesday, January 18, 2012

The other night, while Carl cooked brisket, I whipped up his very favorite childhood dish: Calabasitas! What are calabasitas, you ask? Squash! Prepared (New) Mexico style.

This is a dish that Carl's mama, Norma, perfected and passed down to me. Occassionally we tweak the recipe according to what's in our pantry/refrigerator at the given time, but we stay pretty true to the original, which is always delcious. So, I'm happy to share it with you, too.

- Two squash (here we used butternut and zucchini)
- Olive oil (you can eyeball this, but i would say about 2 tbsps)
- Tomato sauce (one small can, we used Hunt's Natural)
- Freshly grated cheese (your choice. here we used mozzarella and parmesan)
- garlic powder, to taste
- sea salt & pepper, to taste
- any other veggies you want to toss in (corn, grape tomatoes, onions, peppers, scallions, etc.)

- In a skillet, heat olive oil on low; while oil heats, chop squash until you have quarter-inch thick slices
- Place slices in skillet and season. Stir and let heat until squash is tender and transparent
- Remove from heat, drain oil in colander
- Place squash back in skillet on low heat
- Stir in tomato sauce and other veggies, still simmering
- Stir in cheese, which should melt quickly. Remove from heat and enjoy!

January Photo A Day Challenge 10 - 13

Friday, January 13, 2012

Happy Friday, guys!! I hope ya'll had a great week.

Things were pretty mellow around here, but work was busy as usual, and this weekend promises to be full of organizing and cleaning to prepare for the beginning of a new semester. We bought our books today and I cannot even tell you how much we spent. It's insane. Carl's law school books? Um, it should be illegal to charge that much.

Tomorrow night we're treating ourselves to a little date night to celebrate our last school-free weekend, so I'm definitely looking forward to that.

So, as you know, I've been participating in the January Photo a Day Challenge on Instagram. It's been so fun seeing other people's posts and I have really enjoyed thinking about the different prompts each day. Here are my entries over the past few days...

Ringing in 2012!

Monday, January 9, 2012

Okay, so I'm a little over a week late on this post, but all the holiday time off = very long, busy work week. It's been a pretty quiet Monday evening, both Carl & Lily are sound asleep next to me, so while I watch Forensic Files and catch up on my blogroll, I figured I may as well catch up on my blogging, as well.

So, after the cruise, Carl, Lily and I packed up the car *once again* and drove to El Paso to see the rest of our family. It was a short trip, but we were happy to ring in the new year amongst friends and family, and this time, with a twist: we (and by "we" I mean Carl's sister, Vicky, his cousin, Sabine, and his mama) planned a Masquerade Murder Mystery(!). It was a last minute idea, and they managed to pull the party together in under two days...a murder mystery kit download, a few adult punch bowls and appetizer platters later, and we were in business. We had The best part? The party was hosted at Carl's mom's house (where we were staying), so the entire party was baby-friendly and we were able to celebrate the coming of 2012 as one big happy family.
